Approved Minutes for BTA Meeting held April 6, 2011
Meeting called to order at 3:43 pm on April 6, 2011 by Deborah Campbell
Attendance:

Approval of Minutes:
A motion was made by Mary Bustamante and seconded by Mary Lou Green to approve the minutes of the March 2, 2011 meeting. The Treasurer’s report will be added when available.
Site Reports:
BMS - History Day is being offered again in English and History classes. Students are being pulled out of classes and given a pep talk regarding the tests that are coming up.
BHS - Challenge Day is on Wednesday, April 13, 2011. People are complaining about the course outlines. Janice Adams is setting up appointments to meet high school teachers to find out about concerns involving the high school.
Farmar - The principal has asked that a union representative
be on the leadership committee for next year. There are number
of people with pink slips. People want teachers to take action
and make parents aware of the issues regarding teachers being laid off.
Henderson - Open House is May 26 and teachers are not
happy that it is so late.
Turner - Listening tour was done yesterday. There
are several teachers who got pink slips. Teachers are ready to
take action. Saturday, April 9, is the main fundraiser auction
at the Clock Tower.
Semple - Excessive district reserves are now causing
the district teachers to be laid off.
Liberty - There is discussion on how to make more classes
available to students.

CLB - No withdrawals have been made. Teachers will need to
add to the fund for next year.
Negotiations:
Bargaining begins on Monday, April 11. An organizing strategy has
been developed. Bargaining updates will be sent out. Next bargaining
date is April 26 and then again in May. There are conversations being
done with HR and Janice Adams. There is a retirement incentive being
discussed.
Grievance:
Membership:
There is one fee payer.
BTA Executive Board Elections Announcement was given to members.
New Business:
- The last two days of school at elementary and middle school are minimum days.
- The last four days of school at the high school are minimum days.
- There was a discussion about health benefits.
Union Organizing Activities:
- Farmer and Henderson teachers will attend the Open House at BMS on April 14 from 5:30 to 6:30 pm. Teachers are asked to wear black to bring attention to the budget crisis.
- Semple and Turner will attend Open House at BHS on April 20 from 6:00 to 7:00 pm.
- May 5 is a school board meeting. Teachers are asked to wear their raincoats, umbrellas and t-shirts.
- May 13 State-wide action, teachers will wear t-shirts, hold signs, and have a bar-b-que.
- May 19 school board meeting, action may be needed.
- May 26 open house at elementary level.
- There was a motion made by Nan Prolo and seconded by Maggie Olson to spend $10,000 for t-shirts, signs, pins, incentives and a Bar-b-que on May 13. The motion passed.
- Attorney for CTA is now working with the District’s attorney to resolve 3 issues that have come up regarding RIF notices. If those issues are resolved, there will not be a hearing; we could still choose to have a hearing if we feel it is necessary. Hearing is set for April 13th at 3:30. If there is a challenge that is not settled, we will have a hearing.
Other:
- It was suggested that we do training on appropriate internet behavior.
- There was a motion made by Nan Prolo and seconded by Mary Bustamante to have the association pay for data plans for electronic communication at the cost of about $25 a month for eight months for bargaining team members. This is to be reevaluated next year. The motion passed.
- Brief report was given by Suzanne Huddleston about the CTA conference held April 1-3, 2011. CTA has action plans for the week of May 9-13, 2011. CTA held elections for Executive Officers.
